The tiny footprint of this second dwelling in Melbourne’s inner north belies it’s many uses. Conceived as either a breakout space from the original house, or an independent living space, it required a high level of flexibility.

At the ground level, access to both the laneway and the internal courtyard garden means that the space can be used as a living area or a garage. Upstairs is a little more refined and can be configured as either a small apartment or a studio space.

White expanded mesh wraps each end of the upper storey and provides sun and privacy screening to the balcony area. This industrial material is softened by its lighter finish and suits the laneway precinct underneath but also brightens the residential space behind.
